President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, speaking in the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, noted that today the negative consequences of climate change are felt not only in Uzbekistan, but also in many countries around the world. “Air and water pollution, soil erosion, desertification, as well as the uncontrolled use of fossil fuels lead to global warming, an increase in natural disasters and serious damage to the environment and public health,” the president noted. In response to these challenges, Uzbekistan launched the national Green Space initiative three years ago and began implementing the Regional Climate Strategy jointly with neighboring countries. In addition, the University of Central Asia, specializing in the study of climate change and the environment, was established in Tashkent. Particular attention is paid to promoting initiatives in the international arena: Uzbekistan has proposed two key UN resolutions in the environmental sphere. At the same time, “green” energy is already becoming an important driver of economic growth in the country. Taking into account the opinions and suggestions of citizens, the President proposed to take this activity to a new level by declaring 2025 the Year of Environmental Protection and the Green Economy in Uzbekistan. Those gathered fully supported this initiative. The government must develop a state program that will focus on the implementation of the most important tasks identified as priorities for the current year.
This program should specifically highlight the issues of introducing green technologies, saving water, dramatically increasing green areas, mitigating the consequences of the Aral tragedy, solving the waste problem and, most importantly, improving the health of the population. The head of state expressed confidence that the new period will be a time of dynamic development for the New Uzbekistan, which will reach even higher heights of progress. Recall that 2024 was declared the year of support for youth and business in Uzbekistan.
