Practical steps to create a botanical garden of halophytic plants in Karakalpakstan

An important stage in the ecological restoration of the Aral Sea region began with the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev. During a visit to Karakalpakstan, the head of state gave instructions to create a botanical garden of halophytic plants. This project is aimed at improving the environmental situation and restoring the natural resources of the region, which has suffered for decades from the effects of the drying up of the Aral Sea. To implement this ambitious task, with the support of the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a delegation of the Aral Sea International Innovation Center, the Forestry Research Institute and “Yashilloyiha”, headed by the director of the center B. Khabibullaev, went on a business trip to the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, located in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China. The trip, which will take place from December 15 to 21, 2024, aims to study the experience and technologies for creating halophytic and demonstration gardens. The key point of the program will be the delivery of seeds of unique halophytic plants growing in Xinjiang, which will form the basis for a new botanical garden in Karakalpakstan. These plants play an important role in the restoration of saline and degraded lands, as well as in reducing soil salinity. In addition, as part of the trip, the delegation will receive recommendations from leading Chinese experts in the field of halophytic ecology. The exchange of knowledge and technology will be an important step towards the creation of a modern demonstration garden, which will not only improve the ecology of the region, but will also become an educational and scientific platform for specialists and scientists. This initiative underlines Uzbekistan’s commitment to solving the environmental problems of the Aral Sea region, and also demonstrates the importance of international cooperation in combating global challenges. The new botanical garden will become a symbol of hope and restoration, inspiring future generations to care for nature.
