As part of the initiative of the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) from the United Arab Emirates, an international scientific and practical symposium on the theme “The Role of Plant Genetic Resources in Global Climate Change and Food Security” is being held in the city of Tashkent. The symposium brought together scientists and experts from around the world to discuss the most important issues related to the adaptation of agriculture to changing climate conditions and strengthening global food security. The event is attended by representatives of international organizations ICARDA, CIMMYT, FAO, as well as leading experts from Uzbekistan, the UAE, the Netherlands, Norway, Germany, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan, etc. Among the key speakers was the director of the International Innovation Center of the Aral Sea region B.S. Khabibullaev, who presented a report on the theme “Preservation of plant genetic diversity: a strategic vision for the future of gene banks in Central Asia – current roles and prospects.” In his speech, B.S. Khabibullaev emphasized the importance of plant genetic diversity for Central Asia and pointed out the relevance of creating sustainable genetic resources to increase the productivity and sustainability of agricultural crops in the face of increasing climate change. It should be noted that, in response to these challenges, at the initiative of the President, a Genetic Seed Bank was created at the Aral Sea International Innovation Center, which will become an important tool for preserving biodiversity and improving the environmental situation. This bank includes seeds of endemic, agricultural, salt-drought-resistant and desert plants capable of restoring degraded lands. These plants will be able not only to protect the soil from further desertification, but also to improve air quality and living conditions in the region.
