The threat of climate change and the international conference COP 29, which will be held in Azerbaijan

In November this year, the Republic of Azerbaijan will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – COP29. Among the guests are presidents, prime ministers of the world, other officials, as well as representatives of international organizations who will come to Azerbaijan and discuss in detail issues related to climate change. The decisions made during these discussions will directly affect the future of our planet.

The declaration of 2024 in Azerbaijan as the “Year of Solidarity for a Green World” by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev is a clear example of the importance attached to the international event COP29, as well as the steps taken for a green and healthy future. Climate change leads to an increase in global temperature, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, abnormal weather conditions and loss of biodiversity, and also threatens global food security and depletes water resources. If this process is not stopped, catastrophic consequences for the future of humanity and the Earth will be inevitable.

The Paris Climate Agreement focuses on sharing responsibility between developed and developing countries. The agreement calls for a just transition, taking into account each country’s contribution to climate change and its various capabilities to mitigate its consequences. Developed countries have committed to supporting developing countries with finance and technology.

There are several key strategies for the successful implementation of the agreement. First of all, the priority is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure carbon neutrality. In addition, it is important to expand the use of renewable energy sources and improve energy efficiency. At the same time, the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, forest conservation measures and reforestation play an important role.

According to studies, investments in combating climate change can bring in US$7.1 trillion. This will not only prevent future cost increases, but will also stimulate innovation and create many additional social benefits. Therefore, urgent, ambitious and coordinated action by all countries is needed to maintain the 1.5°C target. This is not only important to avoid catastrophic climate change, but can also bring significant socio-economic benefits in the long term.

The upcoming COP29 event in Baku aims to highlight the steps each of us can take for peace and to encourage our joint fight. As a party to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Azerbaijan has joined the fight against global climate change. The ultimate goal of the convention is to prevent any potentially dangerous human interference in the climate system.

About 100 Uzbek non-governmental organizations (NGOs) issued a statement of solidarity with Azerbaijan in connection with (COP29). The document expresses sincere support for the chairmanship of the Conference of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will be held in November 2024 in Azerbaijan. It was noted that the brotherly country highly appreciates the initiatives shown at COP29 and Azerbaijan’s leadership in promoting climate action in the international arena.

Despite population growth and urbanization processes, Uzbekistan strives for more sustainable use of natural resources and ending unsustainable consumption and production patterns. The country is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, so decarbonization and adaptation of the industrial, agricultural and transport sectors to new realities are vital for Uzbekistan. Civil society in Uzbekistan strives to achieve a balance between economic growth and environmental protection, recognizing the importance of meeting current needs without compromising those of future generations.

It is believed that addressing climate change is critical, and the time has come for bold and decisive actions to mitigate the consequences, protect vulnerable communities and important ecosystems. Civil society in Uzbekistan highly appreciates the COP29 presidency and Azerbaijan’s commitment to developing dialogue, cooperation and innovation.

Uzbekistan expresses optimism that Azerbaijan will achieve significant consensus results during the upcoming COP29 negotiations. Civil society in Uzbekistan stands in solidarity with Azerbaijan, which holds the presidency of COP29, in its efforts to accelerate action on climate change and create a brighter future for our planet. We look forward to contributing to building a world where both people and nature thrive in the fight against climate change.
