At the 21st session of the Committee to Review the Implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (CRIC 21), the delegation led by the UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Convention, Ibrahim Thiau, accompanied by the Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change A. Abdukhakimov, paid a visit to the Republic of Karakalpakstan. During the visit, the delegation got acquainted with the scale of work to combat desertification and create protective forest plantations on the dried bottom of the Aral Sea. At the 67th kilometer of the dried seabed, the guests were met by the director of the International Innovation Center of the Aral Sea region, B. Khabibullaev, who gave an introductory presentation about the activities of the innovation center of the Aral Sea region and the work carried out in the region. Also, the delegation got acquainted with the scale of forest reclamation work carried out on the initiative of the Head of State within the framework of the State program presented by the Forestry Agency. Let us recall that during a trip to Muynak in 2018, Shavkat Mirziyoyev set the task of planting salinity-resistant plants on the bottom in order to prevent the spread of millions of tons of dust and toxic salts from the dried bottom of the Aral Sea.
